SUPPORTING MATERIALS
The DDD Detroit Independent Study Program (“Detroit ISP”) consists of three interrelated parts: 1. Studio + Post-Studio; 2. Critical Studies + Art Writing are accepting Fellows for the academic year beginning in September 2026. The third part, 3. Curatorial Practice will commence in September 2027.
All applicants must include:
A clear indication of which program you are applying for (Studio + Post-Studio OR Critical Studies + Art Writing). Please do not apply to more than one program at a time. HOWEVER, Fellows WILL be working together in an interdisciplinary mode.
A C.V. including name, address, telephone number, and email address.
The school you are currently attending or have attended, your degree program, and [expected] date of graduation (may be included in your C.V.).
Names of two referees. Applicants will submit referees’ contact information in the application and the referees will be notified by email about how to upload their letters of recommendation.
A Statement discussing your work, educational experience, and intellectual interests (no more than 1500 words). It is important to note that this Statement is NOT an “artist statement.” The following may help: 1. Offer a brief biography; 2. Discuss your educational experience; and 3. Outline your research interests that you would like to explore in an Independent Study. Please note that the Statement of Independent Study will only be finalized later in the Fall Session. This Statement will enable the ISP to start thinking about the composition of a Committee to support your work.
Studio + Post Studio Applicants:
In addition to the general application, all applicants to the Program in Studio + Post Studio must also submit examples of recent work with brief descriptions of media and scale. These examples should be submitted in chronological order in a Power Point. There should not be more than 15 examples.
If submitting examples of film or video, please include these as links (hosted on a website such as Vimeo, YouTube, or other platform). Film and video submissions should not exceed 30 minutes in total. If you are submitting an extract from a longer work please indicate the length of the original work.
Critical Studies + Art Writing Applicants:
In addition to the general application, all applicants in Critical Studies + Art Writing must submit a writing sample (no more than 15 pages), and an individual research project proposal (no more than 5 pages).
In order to ensure diverse and equitable participation in the program, and for our funders to feel confident in this aspect of our work, we will send an optional demographic survey soon.
Curatorial Practice Applicants:
Working closely with an established curator, Fellows in Curatorial Practice will collaborate to research and make preparations for an exhibition including an accompanying catalogue. Working closely with an invited curator, Fellows in Curatorial Practice will also assist in the curation and installation of work from their cohort in Studio + Post-Studio.
