Detroit Independent Study Program

The Detroit Independent Study Program (Detroit ISP) is an interdisciplinary fellowship in Studio + Post-Studio, Critical Studies + Art Writing, and Curatorial Practice.

Fellows pursue their own research proposals through weekly seminars with a meal and invited guests supported by one-on-one mentorship, work-forums, and curated committees.

This community in experimental practice offers an accessible advanced art education.

An Interdisciplinary Program

The DDD ISP is a non-degree, non-certificate work space consisting of three interrelated, interdisciplinary programs:

01

Studio +
Post-studio

Fellows are provided with a studio space in the Boyer Campbell Building and access to an exhibition space for discussions of their developing practice in the Work-Forum. Studio + Post-Studio is open to medium-based work as well as various forms of post-studio practice including architecture. Fellows will also engage with visiting artists and scholars. The Program will conclude with the installation of the Fellow’s work - whether in progress or “finished” - and discussion of the work with an invited public.

02

Critical Studies
+ Art Writing

Fellows in Critical Studies + Art Writing are provided with space in the Boyer Campbell Building to pursue scholarly work and research with assistance from faculty in the form of tutorials and a Committee. Fellows will present their work in seminars. The Program will conclude with a public presentation of the Fellow’s research and the writing of a Report (of work in progress) in published form. In addition to the rich resources available for research in modern and contemporary practice in Detroit, Fellows will also have access to the Library of the Trombley House Seminar + Residency.

03

Curatorial
Practice

Fellows in Curatorial Practice are provided with space in the Boyer Campbell Building to pursue research. Fellows will also have access to an exhibition space for work in progress with assistance from a Committee of scholars  and curators. In addition to the rich resources available for research in modern and contemporary practice in Detroit - including many artist-run projects - Fellows will also have access to the Library of the Trombley House Seminar + Residency. The concluding exhibition of the academic year will be curated with catalogue by the Fellows in Curatorial Practice.
